MEFV gene (FMF) codes for the protein pyrin. Pyrin mutations were found in the MS patients. Pyrin is implicated in the maturation and secretion of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β. (IL-1β is a major mediator of fever and systemic inflammation).
